The report specifically focuses on tactics to recruit and develop Orlando’s cybersecurity talent and invest in the strength of its cybersecurity workforce.
Orlando, Fla. – A new report provides a deep dive into the opportunities that exist for investing in and developing Orlando’s cybersecurity talent workforce. Titled “An Orlando Cybersecurity Talent Deep Dive,” the report focuses on tactics to recruit and develop Orlando’s cybersecurity talent while providing a common language for cybersecurity talent recruitment and outlines the top cybersecurity roles in Orlando.
Released today as part of the UpSkill Orlando initiative, sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, the report is the third installment in the Re-Imagining series, which seeks to help employers and higher education providers in the region identify tactics that create upward mobility career paths for Orlando’s residents.
“Florida, and Orlando specifically, is a place of vibrant and growing opportunities, especially in cybersecurity. But potential hires are not always sure about what employers are looking for,” Tracy Rebar, head of HR for Consumer Branch Banking for JPMorgan Chase, says in the report.
“As cybersecurity continues to take on priority for businesses, using similar language in job postings and clearly defining the skills workers need will help build the pool of qualified candidates, ease recruiting pains and reduce barriers to entry for job seekers.”
Tracy Rebar, head of HR for Consumer Branch Banking for JPMorgan Chase
“There are currently 4,300 cybersecurity job openings in Orlando, an amount larger than the total headcounts for many of Central Florida’s top employers,” said Tim Giuliani, Partnership President and CEO.
“Understanding the need to reskill, upskill and take advantage of existing skillsets is essential for both employees and employers to maintain competitiveness.”
Tim Giuliani, Orlando Economic Partnership President and CEO
The report finds that if companies in Orlando were to implement skills-based hiring tactics and partner with higher education to upskill their existing workforce, they would open their candidate pools to the 750,000 working adults without a four-year degree. While these candidates lack a four-year degree, they may possess the important power skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication, which are valued just as much by cybersecurity employers.
UpSkill Orlando is a regional, skills-based hiring platform that promotes new methods of hiring for local employers. Skills-based hiring is a strategy that generates value for both employers and applicants by creating skill-focused job descriptions and evaluating candidates based on distinct skillsets vs. experience. It requires a mindset shift—one that encourages an employer to evaluate an individual’s skills and abilities instead of background, and rethink job requirements. When implemented, skills-based hiring: helps fill jobs quickly, retains talent, diversifies an organization’s talent pipeline, and helps provide a greater awareness of skill attainment and critical upskilling needs.
