This edition of Profiles in Small Business features Joe Losch, Orlando/Central Florida Market President of Ameris Bank. Find out what makes Ameris different than traditional banks, how the company adapted in the wake of COVID-19, and what makes the Central Florida Region a great place to start a business.
If you were introducing your business to someone new, how would you describe it?
While Ameris Bank offers traditional banking products and services to individuals and businesses, we are different than traditional banks. We step outside the norm and know that it’s our job to make things possible – even if that means scrapping tradition. We are focused on working together with our clients so we can build and develop relationships to make as many of their needs possible.
What brought your business to the Orlando region? What kept you here?
Six years ago, Ameris Bank expanded into the Orlando market because of the area’s exceptional growth. We wanted to be a part of that growth, as it would, in turn, help us expand our presence and reach more people. We have stayed and expanded in Orlando because it has far exceeded our expectations. It is one of our company’s fastest-growing markets and we enjoy our partnerships with our clients and the community.
Why is it important for your business to be a member of the Orlando Regional Chamber?
The Chamber has been a great place to get connected and develop relationships with influential individuals in the community. The Orlando community is very welcoming, allowing for newcomers to easily join. The Orlando Regional Chamber is a great place to start getting involved.
What makes the Orlando region unique for small businesses?
Orlando is an open and welcoming city for everyone, including small businesses. The city has grown quicker than most major metro areas, and that growth is driven by the hospitality industry and the amenities the city offers to guests. Visitors quickly realize that this is not only a great place to visit, but also a great place to live and work. The rapid migration of residents, along with a large shadow population of visitors and guests, helps fuel above-average opportunities for small businesses servicing the needs of the market.
What are you most excited for about regarding the future of your business?
Continued growth, expansion and innovation. The banking and financial industry, like many, has changed rapidly due to COVID-19. We had to be flexible to conveniently deliver our products and services to our clients. We developed and expanded delivery channels and continue to look for ways to enhance our services. Even though we shifted a majority of our teammates to remote work, we have not seen a drop in productivity or service quality. That is a testament to our attitude that it is possible, together.
If you had to describe to an out-of-town friend what it’s like to live, work, learn and play in Orlando, what would you say?
Orlando is a great place to establish roots and raise a family. Besides the obvious benefits of the best theme parks in the world, there are so many other recreational and cultural activities in the region. Plus, you can get to beaches with a short drive, and the first-class airport allows you to easily visit any place you can think of.
