Thinking about running for office or being a policy influencer? PLI now offers political and civic training for the next generation of leaders

Applications are open through August 15 for both tracks.

ORLANDO, Fla.  – The Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) is now accepting applications for its Public Leadership Institute (PLI), a unique non-partisan training program designed to prepare Central Florida’s business-minded professionals to serve as future elected officials or public policy influencers.

Formerly known as the Political Leadership Institute, PLI has expanded its scope to include a new Civic Leadership Track—broadening opportunities for leaders who want to shape public policy without running for office.

The program now features two distinct tracks:

    • Political Leadership Track – For individuals seriously exploring candidacy for political office within the next five years. This track provides tools, insights, and training to help potential candidates determine their readiness and understand the demands of public office.
    • Civic Leadership Track – Designed for business and community leaders who want to advocate for policies that strengthen the region but have no intention of seeking elected office.

The expansion of the Public Leadership Institute is a strategic step toward advancing the Orlando 2045 vision—OEP’s long-term roadmap for becoming a globally recognized creative capital powered by connectivity, innovation, and Broad-based Prosperity.

“As the Orlando region’s community grows, so does the need for informed, representative leadership at every level. By preparing a new generation of civic and political changemakers, PLI strengthens the region’s leadership pipeline with individuals equipped to influence the policies and systems that will define Central Florida’s future,” said Tim Giuliani, president and CEO of the OEP.

Whether running for office or shaping policy from within the business or nonprofit sectors, participants are positioned to directly contribute to the Orlando 2045 vision and ensure the region’s progress reflects the voices and needs of all who call it home.

“PLI stands out nationally as a successful model for turning business talent into public leadership,” said Mark R. Mills, president of Mills Strategic Communications, Inc. and longtime PLI advisor. “The addition of the Civic Track reflects today’s landscape—where impact doesn’t always require a campaign.”

Both tracks offer deep insights into how public policy is shaped at the local, regional and state levels, as well as training in messaging, media, advocacy, and ethics. PLI participants join a powerful network of alumni, elected officials, and policy experts who are actively shaping the future of Central Florida. To date, more than 30 PLI graduates have been successfully elected to office, in addition to numerous appointees to influential government boards and commissions.

“This expanded model allows us to meet more leaders where they are—whether they see themselves in elected office or influencing policy from the private sector,” said Bob O’Malley, senior vice president of government affairs at the OEP. “The goal is the same: advance broad-based prosperity through well-informed leadership.”

Applications are open through August 15. There is no cost to participants for either track.

To be eligible, applicants cannot be declared candidates for elected office at the time of application or during the program. Both tracks are non-partisan and emphasize collaboration, leadership development, and regional impact.
