Orlando’s imaginative and innovative culture is the highlight of two national stories that focus on the region’s eclectic neighborhoods and entrepreneurial spirit. The online site Thrillist published “How a family vacation Mecca became one of the most imaginative cities in America” and “How your used bar of hotel soap has a surprising afterlife.”
Both pieces were written by Matt Meltzer, a Miami-based journalist identified by the Orlando Economic Partnership to bring to the market after he wrote a piece on why Orlando would be a good choice to host the Olympic Games. The Partnership designed an itineray for a three-day familiarization tour and facilitated meetings with local businesses Clean the World, Falcon’s Creative Group as well as the East End Market and other Orlando sports and cultural hot spots. Meltzer also met with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and partners critical to the Creative Village project to talk about the University of Central Florida and Valencia College Downtown Campus.
Meltzer writes, “Almost 50 years after Disney put training wheels on Orlando, you’ll find a real city there — in one of the country’s 30 largest metro areas — with a real identity.” He goes on to say Orlando is one of America’s most surprisingly dynamic places as he highlights diverse neighborhoods like the Mills 50 District with its mix of multi-national restaurants and shops.
Thrillist focuses on stories that depict “passion for life” and is a resource for millenials on how to spend their time and money. Its audience is a target for the Orlando Economic Partnership in its efforts to attract top talent to the market. The region’s quality of life and variety of entertainment options are all important factors for high-skill job seekers looking for cutting-edge, vibrant cities to live and work.
