Gallup Well-Being Index

Two metrics are overarching indicators of broad-based prosperity: Gallups’s Well-Being Index and the proportion of households struggling to meet basic needs, measured by the United Way ALICE report.

The Well-Being Index is a composite measure signalling perceived quality of life or life satisfaction. This is a composite score based on five sub-indicators: (1) Purpose (motivation and overall enjoyment) (2) Social Environments (3) Financial Security (4) Community Pride and (5) Physical Health.

*The Well-Being Index is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 represents the lowest possible well-being and 100 represents the highest possible well-being. But, metros fall within a tighter range, with a maximum value in 2017 of 67.6 and minimum value of 58.2. The Percentile chart above refers to the region’s rank among all included metros.
